On-site Detection of Contaminants with Portable Device
The paper “Portable Device for Dual Detection of Fluorescence and Absorbance for Biosensing or Chemical Sensing Applications” [1] discusses the development of a compact device that is capable of simultaneously measuring fluorescence and absorbance, thereby enhancing its utility in biosensing and chemical analysis. This dual-detection capability allows for more accurate assessments of analytes in various samples, including water.
The early detection of potential risks is of great importance to prevent health problems, and this may be achieved through the use of biosensors and chemical sensors. Nevertheless, a considerable number of these instruments still require bulky benchtop equipment. The paper presents a portable device for measuring fluorescence and light absorption that can be used with optical biosensors or chemical sensors. It uses a small laser diode as a light source and three filter-mounted photodiodes as detectors, all of which are inexpensive, customizable and widely available commercially. The results obtained from the device demonstrate a strong correlation with those from commercial instruments, indicating that it could be a valuable tool for early or on-site detection.

In alignment with the objectives of the AquaBioSens project, the authors elaborate on the goal of improving water quality monitoring through innovative sensing technologies. By integrating fluorescence and absorbance measurements, the device aligns with AquaBioSens’ objectives to create effective and user-friendly solutions for the detection of pollutants in water. The current issues, technological challenges, and future direction of the development of portable fluorescence sensors are discussed. The aim is to provide a comprehensive survey on the recent advancements in optics, semiconductors, smartphones, and many other manufacturing technologies that increased the portability, miniaturisation, and sensitivity of portable fluorescence sensor devices.
